The Real Cost of Not Educating a Child: Why It Matters for Society

Every child who doesn’t go to school today becomes a missed opportunity for tomorrow — not just for that child, but for the entire community around them.

It’s easy to think of education as a personal milestone — something that benefits one child, one family, at a time. But the truth is bigger than that. When a child is denied education, the cost doesn’t stay contained. It ripples outward — into families, neighborhoods, the workforce, and the future of the country itself.

At Maa Yog Kripa Seva Samiti (MYKSS), this is the reason our work exists. As a free education NGO, we see firsthand what happens when children get a chance to learn — and what’s lost when they don’t.

The Hidden Costs of an Uneducated Childhood

When we talk about the “cost” of not educating a child, we’re not just talking about lost classroom hours. We’re talking about a chain reaction that plays out over decades.

💰

Lower Lifetime Earnings

Children who miss out on basic education are far more likely to end up in low-wage, insecure work as adults — limiting their ability to support themselves and their families.

🕒

The Cycle Repeats

Uneducated parents are statistically less likely to be able to support their own children’s education — and the cycle of poverty continues into the next generation.

🏥

Health & Wellbeing Gaps

Basic literacy is directly linked to better health outcomes — understanding medicine labels, nutrition information, and accessing healthcare services.

🏢

Weaker Communities

Communities with low education levels often see lower civic participation, less awareness of rights, and reduced ability to advocate for local improvements.

Why This Is Everyone’s Problem, Not Just “Theirs”

It’s tempting to see the education gap as someone else’s issue — a problem for “those families” or “that neighborhood.” But an undereducated population affects everyone, including people who feel far removed from the issue.

  • A smaller pool of skilled workers means slower economic growth for the whole region
  • Higher dependency on social welfare systems over the long term
  • Increased vulnerability to exploitation, child labor, and unsafe work conditions
  • Lost potential — doctors, teachers, engineers, and entrepreneurs who never got the chance to become who they could have been

Every child who doesn’t get an education represents a future that society never gets to see. Multiply that by thousands of children across a city, and the scale of what’s lost becomes hard to ignore.

What Happens When a Child Gets the Chance to Learn

The flip side of this story is just as powerful. When a child gets access to education — even basic literacy and numeracy — the impact compounds over time.

Confidence & Curiosity

Children who learn to read and write often develop a lifelong curiosity — the foundation for continued learning, even outside formal schooling.

🌱

Better Family Outcomes

Educated children are more likely to make informed decisions later in life — about health, finances, and raising their own children.

🎯

New Skills, New Paths

Combined with skill development — like the crash courses MYKSS runs in weaving, mehendi, and handicrafts — education opens doors to real, practical livelihoods.

🤝

Stronger Communities

Every educated child grows into an adult who can contribute — as a worker, a neighbor, a voter, and a role model for the next generation.

What MYKSS Is Doing About It

At MYKSS, we work directly with underprivileged children to close this gap — one child, one classroom session, one workshop at a time. Our work includes:

  • Free education in literacy, numeracy, and general knowledge for children who would otherwise have no access to schooling support
  • Skill development workshops in weaving, mehendi, handicrafts, and other practical crafts
  • Co-curricular activities that build creativity, confidence, and teamwork alongside academics
  • Summer camps that keep children engaged, learning, and growing even outside the school term

We’ve already supported 150+ children through these programs — but the need is far greater than what any single organization can address alone. That’s where community support comes in.

“Alone we can do little, together we can create lasting change.” — MYKSS

How You Can Help Close the Gap

You don’t need to be an educator or a policymaker to make a difference. Every contribution — big or small — helps move the needle:

  • Donate to fund classroom materials, supplies, and program costs
  • Volunteer your time to teach, mentor, or run a skill-building workshop
  • Partner with us as a business or school for CSR initiatives and collaborations
  • Spread awareness — share this message with others who care about education access

Be Part of a Child’s Future

Every donation, every volunteer hour, and every shared story brings a child closer to the education they deserve.

Education isn’t a luxury — it’s the foundation everything else is built on. When we invest in a child’s education today, we’re investing in a stronger, more capable society for everyone, tomorrow.
